When is the right time to start your natural hair I Don't Give A Curl,

Updated: Nov 11, 2023

Okay girl, now that's corny. "I made you look", we used to say. Anywho... if you're reading this, either you're considering jumping on the Amtrak, or you've already begun. Read this article if you're considering going natural.

I do not sponsor the link above. The key is starting a "journey", which takes strategic planning, which is essential.

My experience with starting my own journey was to free my head from toxins. I cannot explain how free I felt removing negative experiences from my head. I tell you I felt like I dropped a huge weight from my head, literally. I always say that a scorned woman is literally scorned and scolded for being scorned.

Deep breathes, Sis go light your candle and come back. Exhales

Where were we? As I was saying, your hair is your crown and we don't want it tarnished. So don't despair. I have been there, and I'm right here with you sis! I suggest sourcing out what works best for your hair. I'm happy to share what I have done wrong with my hair. For example, I suggest that you don't trust your hair with someone who's just talking about something they've never tried themselves. It's my opinion and suggestion. From my experience, it doesn't work for me.

Nine years ago I chopped off my hair.

I would visit the local wig shop to find products that'd help turn my damaged hair back healthy. At the time, I wasn’t concerned about growing my hair long. The key to wanting natural hair like our skin, we want to have healthy hair and beautiful skin. The less manipulation and stress on your skin and hair is the best. You have to also change your diet.

At the wig shop, I purchased products with the following: Jamaican Black Castrol oil, carrot oil, name brand products that contained the word "growth", which stated organic and natural. I have practiced 2 strand twists before all the hype. I've been doing my hair in 2 strand twists, since I was old enough to do my own hair. I styled my hair in styles that I was getting side eyed and mocked. I was putting my 2 strands in banana clips. You can see from my photos, In my mind, I was very creative with the way I wore my hair.

I used the products that I am sharing with you on this blog. At that time, I didn't realize that it would be the beginning of making products. I learned from mixing products to achieve different looks, especially when I would do protective styles. Over time I noticed not only was my hair extremely healthy, but it wasn't very corse, my hair was growing. I mean, my hair was growing extremely fast. I had to trim my hair more often than ever before.

Compare the 2 photos.

Again, prepare yourself before starting your journey. Through trial and error I had to learn how not to manipulate my hair, choose wisely what type of protective styles, and how they are installed. Some people pull too tight on your hair causing you to experience bald spots and no edges. Yes, the styles are cute, but having bald spots? Is it worth it? Not for me. I had to start all over again. Which is why I opted for locs. Many assume switching from natural hair to locs will be easy. Well, I have to tell you that it's not.

The great thing about having locs is, you can get up, and do very little to your hair. Finally, I have the freedom to get up, shower, brush my teeth, then go about my day. However, your hair needs oil, shampooing, conditioner, water, i.e. moisture.
